I was trained as an actor, before in Italy, with the experience of the independent group Aikot 27, then around the world, with several formative experiences with Jim Slowiak, Jairo Cuesta, Marco Sgrosso, Elena Bucci, Philippe Gaulier, Norman Taylor and Mariangela Gualtieri.
In 2006 I graduated in theatre studies (DAMS) at the University of Bologna. In 2011 I achieved a Master in Philosophy of Performance at the University of Macerata and in 2018 I obtained a Master’s degree in Theatre Directing at the RITCS School of Arts in Brussels.
Between 2012 and 2020 I have been associated actor and teacher at the Italian Institute of Culture in Brussels.

In recent years, he has been developing his own theatrical practice and has been focusing on a documentary approach with several references to history, one of his main passions. His approach to the subject can be defined as almost scientific, as he likes to combine different documentary materials (articles; testimonies; real facts) and to transpose them into theatre. At the same time, he is focusing on a form that goes beyond the black-box and does not necessarily involve professional actors. He is interested in working with communities and storytelling. He is currently active in participatory projects in the peripheries of Brussels, with Casi-UO in Anderlecht (association that works since almost 50 years with Italian migrants in Belgium) and with the working-space Transfocollect in Schaerbeek (space of theatrical expression for young people, mainly with a migration background).

I am also a guest teacher at the Royal School of Theatre, Sound and Cinema (Ritcs School of Arts) of Brussels, where I give a urban documentary workshop, which involves students of different media.
From 2020 I’m one of the selected artists of “Crossing the Sea”, a long term-strategy project that aims to establish connection and cooperation between the performing art sector in Italy and in the Middle East and Asiatic countries. The project is supported by the Italian Ministry of Culture and Heritage.
As a performer I am touring in the performance of Julian Hetzel, "All Inclusive" (production CAMPO Gent; Frascati Amsterdam; Schauspiele Leipzig; Kammerspiele Muenchen), which has been presented in several European Festivals such as "Actoral", "Impulse", "Belluard", "Biennale Teatro", "Spielart" and "Mladi Levi".

I am first assistant of the Belgian filmmaker Manu Riche for his new docu-fiction “Charbon-The Eternal Fire” and, at the same time, I am working as a theatre-maker on a new performance about the communities of the Apennines from Central Italy, “La montagna è finita” (“The mountain is over”), an Italian-Belgian co-production that will premiere during November 2023 in Genk.

Negli ultimi anni sviluppo la mia pratica teatrale concentrandomi su un approccio documentaristico, con evidenti riferimenti alla Storia, una delle mie più grandi passioni. Affronto ogni argomento da un punto di vista quasi scientifico, utilizzando e combinando materiale documentario (articoli, testimonianze, fatti reali) per poi tradurli in forma teatrale.
Contestualmente mi indirizzo verso un lavoro che supera i confini della black-box teatrale e coinvolge attori non necessariamente professionisti. Mi interessa la ricerca sulle comunità, sulla narrazione e la trasmissioni di storie.
Recentemente sono attivo in progetti socio-culturali nelle periferie, con il Centro d'Azione Sociale Italiano di Anderlecht (associazione che lavora da quasi cinquant'anni con i migranti italiani in Belgio) e con la piattaforma Transfocollect di Schaerbeek (spazio di espressione teatrale per giovani e meno giovani brussellesi con un background migrante ma non solo),

Dal 2020 faccio parte del progetto “Crossing the Sea”, progetto di internazionalizzazione dello spettacolo dal vivo che ha lo scopo di creare e consolidare collaborazioni di lungo termine tra Italia, Medio Oriente e Asia, di cui Marche Teatro – Inteatro Festival è ente capofila.

Edoardo Ripani readapts Aeschylus’ Seven against Thebes to bring on stage a contemporary tragedy and a lesser-known episode of Italian history: the story of the brothers Patrizio and Roberto Peci. A story which is also the story of his city, San Benedetto del Tronto.
Patrizio Peci was a regular militant and a leading figure of the Red Brigades (the biggest Marxist-Leninist armed group active in Europe after the Second World War) between 1974 and 1980. Shortly after his arrest in 1980, he decided to collaborate with the police and the judges, becoming the first penitent and collaborator of justice in the history of Italian terrorism. His depositions were decisive to understand the structure of the terrorist organisation and facilitated its dismantling.
Roberto Peci, Patrizio's younger brother, served for a short period in extreme left-wing groups in the Marche region, without ever joining the armed struggle. He was kidnapped on June 10, 1981 by a command of Red Brigades and, after 54 days of imprisonment, he was killed by the terrorists. It was an act of revenge in the context of the so-called "campaign against traitors" launched by the Red Brigades with the intent to hit those who "had betrayed the revolution" and cooperated with the Italian state. This story represents in an exemplary way “the years of lead”, made of dreams that have become nightmares, of painful losses, betrayals, infamous murders, delusions of omnipotence and infinite tears. Those years marked an entire generation, with wounds that have not yet completely healed. For those who lived through that decade it is difficult to talk about it with detachment, just as it is difficult for Italy to deal with this part of its own history.
Edoardo Ripani was born in the same city as the Peci brothers, San Benedetto del Tronto, and grew up in the same neighbourhood as part of the Peci family. San Benedetto is known in Italy for its fishermen, the industrial pole of ice, its glorious football team and for the presence of a considerable Red Brigade nucleus in the Seventies.
The tragic story of Patrizio and Roberto Peci is still today an open wound for all the people of San Benedetto, a story that contains all the elements of a Greek tragedy. In Aeschylus' Seven Against Thebes, which echoes throughout the play, the choir is made up of “Theban girls”, witnesses of the war that sets their city on fire. In Fratelli. What pain hangs over my city? this role of testimony is played by the "Choir of Sambenedettesi", a choir consisting of women (all of them not professional actresses) from San Benedetto del Tronto, who witnessed those events. The entire dramaturgical line of the performance follows the structure of an ancient Greek tragedy, since this story is a contemporary Italian tragedy, in which power, family relationships and horrible misdeeds are mixed, like in the “Theban Cycle”. Patrizio and Roberto could be considered as two contemporary Eteocles and Polynices, in a cursed San Benedetto, contemporary Thebes. The choir brings to the stage the bodies and the voices of a lost city, disrupted by the tragic events of the years of lead. However, the female aspect is also important for another reason: in the whole history of the Peci brothers the only survivors, though with a heavy pain, are women. They are the mother, the two sisters, the widow and the daughter of Roberto. This is the fate of the women of San Benedetto, who for centuries have mourned their men, who had drowned in the Adriatic Sea.
Fratelli. What pain hangs over my city? is a performance that mixes narration, documentary and pyrotechnic installations. Two parallel lines interact in the show: one consists of words and documents that reconstruct the story of the two brothers; the other is pyrotechnic images and metaphors, which reproduce the violent atmosphere of those years. The play has been successfully presented beyond Italian borders, namely in Belgium. The reception from the audience showed that the story narrated in the play is universal and adapt for an international audience, also thanks to the structure of the Greek tragedy.

Edoardo Ripani porta in scena la storia dei fratelli Peci, che è anche la storia della sua città, San Benedetto del Tronto.
Patrizio Peci fu militante regolare e figura di spicco delle Brigate Rosse tra il 1974 e il 1980, quando fu arrestato a Torino. Poco dopo il suo arresto decise di collaborare con forze dell’ordine e magistratura, divenendo il primo pentito e collaboratore di giustizia nella storia del terrorismo italiano. Le sue deposizioni furono decisive per comprendere la struttura dell’organizzazione terroristica e ne facilitarono lo smantellamento.
Roberto Peci, fratello minore di Patrizio, militò per un breve periodo in gruppi marchigiani di estrema sinistra, senza mai unirsi alla lotta armata. Fu rapito il 10 Giugno 1981 da un commando di brigatisti e, dopo 54 giorni di prigionia, fu ucciso dai terroristi. Si trattò di un atto di vendetta nel contesto della cosiddetta “campagna contro i traditori” lanciata dalle BR guidate da Giovanni Senzani, con l’intento di colpire chi “aveva tradito la rivoluzione” e cooperato con lo Stato Italiano. Questa vicenda rappresenta in maniera esemplare gli anni di piombo, fatti di sogni diventati incubi, di perdite dolorose, tradimenti, omicidi infami, deliri di onnipotenza e lacrime infinite. Quegli anni hanno segnato un’intera generazione, con ferite che non si sono ancora completamente rimarginate. Per chi ha vissuto quel decennio è difficile parlarne con distacco, così come è difficile per l’Italia costruire una memoria nazionale comune di quella fase storica.
Edoardo Ripani è nato nella stessa città dei fratelli Peci, San Benedetto del Tronto, ed è cresciuto nello stesso quartiere di una parte della famiglia Peci. San Benedetto è conosciuta in Italia per i suoi pescatori, il polo industriale del ghiaccio, la sua gloriosa squadra di calcio e per la presenza di un nucleo brigatista considerevole negli anni Settanta.
La tragica vicenda di Patrizio e Roberto Peci è ancora oggi una ferita aperta per tutti i sambenedettesi, una vicenda che ha già in sé tutti gli elementi della tragedia greca. Ne “I Sette contro Tebe” di Eschilo, che echeggia durante tutta la pièce, il coro è formato dalle “fanciulle tebane”, testimoni della guerra che incendia la loro città. In Fratelli. Qual doglia incombe sulla mia città? questo ruolo di testimonianza è interpretato dal “Coro delle Sambenedettesi”, un coro costituito da donne di San Benedetto del Tronto, testimoni proprio di quella stagione.
L'intera impalcatura drammaturgica della performance segue la struttura di un'antica tragedia greca, poiché questa storia è una tragedia italiana contemporanea, in cui si mescolano potere, rapporti familiari e orribili misfatti, come nel “Ciclo Tebano”. Patrizio e Roberto potrebbero essere considerati come due Eteocle e Polinice contemporanei, in una San Benedetto maledetta, Tebe contemporanea. Il “Coro delle Sambenedettesi” porta in scena i corpi e le voci di una città perduta, disgregata dalle tragiche vicende degli anni di piombo. Tuttavia l'aspetto femminile è importante anche per un altro motivo: in tutta la storia dei fratelli Peci le uniche sopravvissute, seppur con il peso di un grande dolore, sono le donne. La madre, le due sorelle, la vedova e la figlia di Roberto. È il destino delle donne di San Benedetto, che per secoli hanno pianto i loro uomini annegati nel mare Adriatico.
Fratelli. Qual doglia incombe sulla mia città? è una performance che mescola narrazione, documentario e installazioni pirotecniche. Nello spettacolo interagiscono due linee parallele: una è fatta di parole e documenti che ricostruiscono la storia dei due fratelli; l'altra è composta da immagini e metafore pirotecniche, che riproducono l'atmosfera violenta di quegli anni.
Lo spettacolo porta in scena una pagina dolorosa della recente storia italiana, forse non troppo conosciuta al di fuori dei confini marchigiani, soprattutto dai più giovani. Eppure, nelle repliche avute finora, si è potuto verificare come lo spettacolo tocchi, in maniera forte e catartica, non solo la generazione che ha vissuto gli “anni di piombo”, ma anche chi non era ancora nato in quegli anni e fatica a comprendere quel periodo. Sia in Italia che in Belgio, lo spettacolo ha messo a confronto pubblici (di estrazione, età e culture diverse) con la storia italiana ed europea più recente. A partire dalla seconda replica, tenutasi a Bruxelles, al termine della rappresentazione, viene realizzato un confronto diretto con il pubblico, nel quale sono sempre emerse domande, commenti, riflessioni e ricordi su quel periodo storico comunemente chiamato “anni di piombo”. Durante questo dibattito, diventato ormai una seconda parte effettiva dello spettacolo, sempre particolarmente intenso e profondo è l’apporto del “Coro delle Sambenedettesi”, composto da donne, coetanee e concittadine dei fratelli Peci. Molte fra loro hanno vissuto gli anni Settanta sperimentando forme di attivismo e impegno politico non violento, all’interno dei movimenti femministi e di gruppi extraparlamentari come “Lotta Continua”. Nell’incontro con il pubblico emergono ricordi, pensieri e riflessioni su quel periodo, quando la parola “rivoluzione” aveva un significato molto concreto e quando, purtroppo, in nome di questa rivoluzione molti giovani hanno fatto la scelta estrema, folle e dolorosa della lotta armata. La tragica vicenda dei fratelli Peci è esemplare in questo senso e, anche se ci appare lontana, lo spettacolo aiuta a fare i conti con la nostra storia e a comprendere dinamiche umane e sociali universali.
La montagna è finita
Tra il 24 agosto 2016 e il 18 gennaio 2017, tre forti terremoti hanno cambiato il paesaggio dell'Italia Centrale, lungo la catena montuosa dell'Appennino, nella mia regione. Il terremoto è stato solo l'ultimo e il più drammatico evento di un intero periodo di depressione che ha toccato l'Appennino Centrale dalla fine della Seconda Guerra Mondiale in poi. Spopolamento, crisi economica, calamità naturali e mancanza di infrastrutture hanno reso l'area uno dei "luoghi dimenticati" d'Italia e d'Europa. Il senso di abbandono e la rabbia si sono mescolati e si sono nutriti a vicenda. Ma non si tratta di una situazione specifica: l'Appennino centrale e le sue comunità sono esempi di altre piccole comunità sparse nel continente europeo, emarginate e disgregate dalla globalizzazione degli ultimi decenni.

La montagna è finita (The mountain is over)
Between 24 August 2016 and 18 January 2017, three strong earthquakes changed the landscape of Central Italy, along the mountains of the Apennines, in my region. The shock of the earthquake was just the latest and the most dramatic event of an entire period of depression that has plagued the Central Apennine region since the end of World War II. Depopulation, economic crisis, natural disasters and lack of infrastructure have made the area one of the "forgotten places" of Italy and Europe. The sense of abandonment and anger have mingled and fed on each other. But this is not a specific situation: the central Apennines and their communities are just an exemple of other small communities scattered throughout the European continent, which have been marginalized and disintegrated by globalization in recent decades.

A partire dall'incontro con il territorio, gli abitanti e l'architettura del piccolo borgo di Ripe San Ginesio (MC), un borgo semiabbandonato alle pendici dei Monti Sibillini, il laboratorio/residenza creato in occasione del Festival "BorgoFuturo19", ha raccolto storia, storie, personaggi, immagini, pensieri, sogni ed incubi del borgo, per rielaborarli in chiave teatrale. Il risultato finale è stato "Borgo in scena, Ripe San Ginesio tra finzione e realtà", una performance partecipativa nella quale tutto il paese di Ripe San Ginesio -o quasi- è stato messo in scena.
Sulla base di un approccio documentaristico, i partecipanti al laboratorio sono stati direttamente coinvolti nel processo di creazione e di messa in scena del borgo stesso.
Il "Borgo in scena, Ripe San Ginesio tra finzione e realtà", ha offerto una panoramica più larga sulle questioni esistenziali della popolazione stessa: si resta o si parte? E se si parte è possibile tornare?
La forma immersiva e partecipativa del progetto poneva anche un accento sull'architettura del luogo, ferita dal sisma del 2016 e dallo spopolamento progressivo degli ultimi 50 anni.

Starting from the meeting with the place, the inhabitants and the architecture of Ripe San Ginesio (Macerata, Marche Region), a semi-abandoned village nearby the Sibillini Mountain Chains, the workshop/residence created in the occasion of "BorgoFuturo19" Festival collected stories, biographies, characters, images, thoughts, dreams and nightmares of this village, and realaboreted them in a theatrical form. This results into "Borgo in scena, Ripe San Ginesio tra finzione e realtà", a participatory performance in which -almost- all the village of Ripe San Ginesio was on stage.
From a documentary approach, the participants of the wokshop were directly involved in the creative process.
The "Borgo in scena, Ripe San Ginesio tra finzione e realtà", offered a view on some existential questions of the people living there: shall we leave or shall we stay? And if we leave, will it be possible to come back?
The immersive and participative form of the project was focused also on the architecture of the village, wounded by the earthquake of 2016 and by the progressive depopulation of the last 50 years.
